A Look Into Light-Emitting Diode Light History

Monday, February 9th, 2009

How were light-emitting diodes discovered? In fact it was simply an occasion. It was in the the first years of the twentieth century that it was found out that the semiconductor Silicon Carbide (SiC) was able to give light when provided with electricity. Still the discovery was not worked on as the light produced by the semiconductor was not strong enough to be of any use. Still luckily that was not the end of LED technique development.

20 years were left aside and the idea of LED creation was supported by specialists from Russia and Germany again. But the project wasn't successful for the specialists didn't seem to make those lights better. In 1936 the report on the problem was let out, it featured the 1st application of the term electroluminescence and rekindled the curiosity of led lights. The new science was nevertheless not really successful that time. Once more in some time in 1950s due to the researches of British scientists the time of development began. They found the method to produce infrared LEDs. So that all was followed by the invention of the 1st visible spectrum LED, which shined red and was made with Gallium Phosphide (GaP).

And then the fast development of light-emitting diode technique started. Now some success in that was gained regularly. Different tints and brighter light were made with the use of different substrates. Orange and pale green were created just after red, then appeared yellow and saturated green. As for the popular blue LEDs , they were created in 90-es as Gallium Nitride was used in the production for the first time. (more…)
